Chess Books by Yasser Seirawan

One of the things that many chess players get involved with while learning to improve their game is reading chess books.  I once heard that no other subject except for religion has had more books written about it.  Since I first started playing chess, I have come across many, many chess books.  They cover all aspects of the game such as openings, combinations, game theory, endgames, middlegame techniques and defense.  Of the authors that have made an impression upon me, Grandmaster Yasser Seirawan certainly stands out.  The books that he has written are informative and easy to understand.  GM Seirawan includes many useful illustrations that explain his concepts and I feel that only goes to help solidify one’s understanding of the game.  Below are some examples of his books that I have read and I am only too happy to recommend them.  Enjoy!

Sorry!

This is another board game that has been around for a LONG time.  It is based upon the Indian game pachisi and has proven to be a source of fun for the multitudes. But don’t think that this game has lost it’s appeal. Newer modern versions are also available.

Mousetrap

I first played Mousetrap when I was a kid.  It was always so much fun putting all the stuff together that would you allow to take a metal ball, start it at the beginning of this contraption that you put together.  It would roll this way and that way and cause all sorts of things to happen such as making someone jump off a diving board into a bucket but ultimately;  the goal was to catch the mouse in the trap.  This is a game that has stood the test of time and provides fun for all ages.

The Art of Attack in Chess

I read this classic chess book by Vladimir Vukovic when I was first learning about the game.  The manual describes philosophies and concepts that can be employed by any player when the are planning to execute an attack on the opponent’s King.  Vukovic breaks the concepts down into general categories of attack that are based on the castling options of the opposing King.  Once you have read “The Art of Attack in Chess,” your game play will rise to a new and possibly intimidating level for those who dare to face you at the chessboard.

This is a book that is a must have for any chess player’s library!
